Hey Rosetta! – Red Heart

As if I haven’t plugged them enough here, a music video can’t hurt! I swear I’m not obsessed with Newfoundland’s Hey Rosetta!.

I really love the video’s setting, it’s an open field, there’s an autumn tree, minimal amounts of gear. The track itself starts off with quite a driven drum line so it’s only fitting to begin with a shot them walking to the dig site. I find the whole video is very mysterious after that to be honest. It’s quite foggy, but it all fits with the actual song, to be honest, I spend far too much time trying to figure out what this record is actually saying. A few minutes into the video a girl in a white dress appears. Is she a ghost? Is she lost? I don’t know! And then a human heart appears, it’s not bloody or anything but I mean…it’s a heart! A red heart! You see where this is going I’m sure…

If nothing else, watch it for Tim Baker (the vocalist)

Shad – The Old Prince

I haven’t reviewed a music video lately, and I can’t believe I overlooked this one.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sH8SDiPPjoc

When I was little I watched The Fresh Prince of Bel Air religiously. I grew up watching Will getting into trouble, Carlton bailing him out and Hilary asking daddy for money. The opening sequence to the show has become one of the most prominent icons representing the 90s. Tackling such a premise can get ugly, but Polaris Prize nominated Shad did a really great job with this one. The video is essentially a take by take remake of the Fresh Prince opener. He gets into the cab, plays basketball, gets caught creating some graffiti, it’s all there! Don’t forget to read the names for the credits, they’re fun little puns/lines from the lyrics. There’s even a nice shout out to mine and Shad’s hometown, London (instead of Bel Air’s Hollywood). It doesn’t hurt that Shad’s got this great like-ability to him. My favourite is most definitely the end. “Just vibe with it”.

Premise: 10/10
Match for the Music: 8/10
“Acting”: 9/10
“Cinematography”: 10/10
Points for Re-Staging a 90’s icon:    5/5

I meant to discuss this music video a month ago, but well, I’m a slow one.

I adore the premise of this video. The colours, the wardrobe, the choreography, it fits together like peas in a pod. Highlights include an under the table party, table top dancing and matching outfits. Although there is one sketchy 15 second scene where the band is just standing around, but one of them has a guitar, and no one else has an instrument. Aside from that random scene, a fun music video, complete with a wink!

Constantines – Hard Feelings

This music video came out a few weeks ago, but let’s review it anyway!

A clean music video, very simple and fresh, however it’s borderline boring. Not quite boring, just long enough to keep my attention. Nothing happens, but it works for the song and the band. Oh, don’t forget about the bad ass fist-nudge after Wil’s guitar solo. Did anyone else think the video was a little Wil/Bry centric? Or was that just a result of me spending too much time within youtube-fandom-land?

Premise: 8/10

This song was posted as the NMC Track of the Day today, and the music video almost made me cry.

Quick, go grab your Kleenex box!

All around a great music video. Great use of lighting, the premise is easy to follow. There’s a bit of cheesy acting, but it worked for the context of the video.
